Print at home Braille books

All files available on this site can be downloaded and produced by any local blindness agency at little cost. This website also provides 3D printable braille resources that can be printed at most local printing stores (including Officeworks).

Unless there are complications, children should learn Contracted (Grade 2) Braille first!
Commence with ABC and Alpha Wordsigns books at the same time

ABC

A book of letters of the alphabet a-z with a graphic and 3 samples of the letter to locate. The graphics are labeled and generally within the experience of a child with a vision impairment.

These are to be used at the same time as the Alpha Wordsigns. Young Braille readers should learn contracted Braille from Day 1. The word ‘for’ is contracted to introduce the reader to the full Braille cell.

Alpha Wordsigns

This level is to introduce the standalone Braille word signs. These are addressing early Braille literacy and tactile graphicacy, as well as guiding the parents through the basics of the UEB Braille Code. NEVER ask your child to guess the picture, always tell them what it is, then verbally explore the graphic together.

These Wordsigns should be introduced first to give the learner instant meaning from the dots. E.g. the word ‘like’  like is hard few new readers to decode. The contracted word ‘like’  l is much easier!

 

Groupsigns

This level is to introduce the Strong Contractions Wordsigns and Groupsigns. These are addressing early Braille literacy and tactile graphicacy, as well as guiding the parents through the basics of the UEB Braille Code. NEVER ask your child to guess the picture, always tell them what it is, then verbally explore the graphic together.

Many of these can be used as Stand Alone Wordsigns, as well as within other words.

Dot 5, Dot 45 and 456

This level is to introduce the Initial Letter Contractions, wordsigns and groupsigns. These are addressing early Braille literacy and tactile graphicacy, as well as guiding the parents through the basics of the UEB Braille Code. NEVER ask your child to guess the picture, always tell them what it is, then verbally explore the graphic together.

Lower Contractions, Final Contractions and Shortforms

This level is to introduce the Lower and Final Wordsigns and groupsigns as well as Shortforms. These are addressing early Braille literacy and tactile graphicacy, as well as guiding the parents through the basics of the UEB Braille Code. NEVER ask your child to guess the picture, always tell them what it is, then verbally explore the graphic together.
